What We Teach
Our Curriculum at Neyland Community Primary School
At Neyland Community Primary School, our curriculum is built on the Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) and fully aligns with Curriculum for Wales. We are proud to offer a knowledge-rich, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that ensures every child is equipped with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in life.
Our curriculum is carefully planned and well-sequenced from Nursery to Year 6. This means that children build on what they have learned before and develop a deep understanding of the world around them. All pupils follow this broad and consistent curriculum, including those with additional learning needs and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Every child is entitled to the same high-quality learning.
The Four Purposes
Everything we teach is designed to support the Four Purposes of Curriculum for Wales. We aim for all our learners to become:
Ambitious, capable learners who enjoy learning and achieve their best
Enterprising, creative contributors who can think critically and work well with others
Ethical, informed citizens who understand their community, Wales, and the wider world
Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives
These purposes shape every area of learning and underpin the experiences we offer our children each day.
A Knowledge-Rich Curriculum
We believe that knowledge empowers children. By providing well-chosen, carefully sequenced content, we ensure that pupils develop a strong foundation in every subject. Historical figures, scientific concepts and important cultural ideas are introduced in a clear, structured way so that learning builds over time and makes sense.
Our approach ensures:
- High expectations for all pupils
- A shared, consistent curriculum across the school
- Equal access to ambitious content
- Strong preparation for future learning
We plan so that nothing important is left to chance.
The principles of our Knowledge Rich Curriculum:
- Knowledge is valued and specified
- Knowledge is well sequenced
- Knowledge is taught to be remembered
The content in our curriculum has been carefully chosen by subject experts and has been sequenced in a meaningful way that enables all children to make connections and progress from unit to unit, term to term and year to year. We recognise and value each subject ensuring that our children develop a deep understanding and love of each distinct discipline. Where appropriate, links are made across disciplines to enable children to make meaningful connections. Our curriculum includes local history, geography, and other locally relevant subject content.
