Fantastic Fridays
All learners at Neyland will take part in our 'Fantastic Fridays'. On Fridays, both pupils and staff come into school prepared for a whole day of outdoor learning – whatever the weather!
Check out our film – we are very proud that it has featured on the ERW website as an example of effective outdoor learning;
Our Outdoor Environment
We value and take pride in our outdoor environment and have a long term vision of continual commitment to development and improvement of our grounds to ensure they provide purposeful learning opportunities for our children throughout their time at Neyland Community School.
As a school, we are developing our outdoor areas to provide enriching opportunties for our learners.
Each class has their own outdoor learning space attached to the classroom to support with learning throughout the week. We also have a fabulous school pond wildlife area that we are working with Pembrokeshire Rangers to develop so that it becomes an inspiring area for our learners to connect with nature and to engage in outdoor education. This area is also the focus of our commitment to achieving the Conserver award as part of the John Muir Trust https://www.johnmuirtrust.org/john-muir-award
School Garden
We have a school garden that we will be using to support curriculum learning and to grow and sell produce.
As part of our commitment to outdoor learning, we will endeavour to ensure our pupils have opportunities to learn through educational visits to the locality in Neyland and beyond.
Orienteering
Our school grounds have been designed to make learning active, by putting health and wellbeing at the core of learning. Orienteering is suitable for all ages. The aim is to navigate between checkpoints marked on a special orienteering map, markers are located throughout the school grounds. Learners have the opportunity to explore their environment, gain map reading skills and translate this into the wider world.
Forest School / Ysgol Goedwig
This is a child-centred learning process that offers opportunities for holistic development through regular sessions.
It is a program that supports PLAY, exploration and supported risk taking.
It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired hands-on experiences in a natural setting.
The aim of Forest School is to help learners develop, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. It is a safe, non-judgemental nurturing environment for learners to experiment and take risks.
It inspires a deep and meaningful connection to the world and an understanding of how as a learner they fit into it.
This year, some of our youngest learners in Reception have explored the wonders we have in our school site, finding some wriggly worms, learning about the importance of all creatures and their role within our environment.
Palm drilling was a focus and how the learners used their skills of patience and perseverance to make necklaces using wood cookies.
A great motor development tool, and a great way of acknowledging and keeping to safe tool working practices.
